  • Letter of the week

We are the recipients of a huge volume of really extra-ordinary mail here at Queen B.  Emails.  Letters/cards.  Facebook posts.  They're the pep in our step.  The wind in our sails.  The hand holding us up.

Given the big difference it makes to us, I thought we'd pay it forward.  So, each week we're going to pick a "Letter of the week".  We'll publish it and send the lovely writer a little extra Queen B bee-created light.  In some ways its trifling to pick 52 bits of feedback from the hundreds that we received, but I figure we're better doing something that nothing at all.

Seriously, lovely letters are what make the world go around.  I don't think that I am unique in small business in completely doing my head in (!!) over-thinking everything, and making sure that every decision I make it ethical and sustainable etc.  So it's really lovely to be reminded to lift your head to the light and to remember what we're doing here and the difference we're making.

Today was a really special day which is perhaps why it finally struck me that I needed to do this!  We received several really lovely emails, but one in particular really touched me.  She wrote about an issue that has long concerned me and never written about because I was sick of negativity!  I share her email here:

    "Dear Cate and Sarah,

You truly spoil me.  You cannot imagine my surprise to find my beautiful candles waiting for me so soon after I ordered when I got back home this morning after a trip to the shop.  It wasn't until I opened the box and got a glorious waft of honey that I knew who my parcel was from.

I expressed how much I loved your products yesterday but I had only sample the jam jar tea lights. As I unwrapped each item I grew more and more excited. And the lollipops! How novel! I cannot wait to try them!

I have to say it again. You're products are AMAZING and you should be so proud.

    Thank you again,
    K"

Thank you K.  Your email really touched all of us.  I'm not sure that I am particularly deft at negotiating great marketing with running an ethical business.  But I do know that all 3 of us turn up at Queen B every day and give it everything that we have to give (and sometimes more).  And it's lovely when that is appreciated.

Thank you to all of you who communicate with us - be it in comments, Facebook posts, emails, letters or on the phone.  May you be the recipient of a random gift of light (be it from us or from someone else) in return.

    Cate xx

  • Feedback to bring a tear to your eye

Earlier this week I received an email that brought a tear to my eye.  I wanted to get permission to share it - and that I now have.

This is why I do what I do...

"Cate, I spent the early evening with our 9 year old grandson, chatting out on the patio.

I brought out some of your candles as the sun went down... the ambience was very significant.

he and I had a wonderful conversation... his parents are divorcing... it was very special.

your candles were a special part of that and I wanted you to know.

do you market ambience?...I am sure that you do...perhaps my situation is unique."

Thanks CD.  While your email brought a tear to my eye.  It is wonderful to get out of my head and to feel.  I'm not sure that words can actually ever describe what a gift bee created candle light is, but yours sure rocked my world.

    Cate xx

  • Double barrelled lovin'

I just love getting emails on Queen B candles and what they're doing in our friends' lives and am particularly enamoured when our lovers take the time to send photographs.  This week one lovely customer sent double barrelled loving our way.

"I have tracked down a few photos which include the gorgeous Queen B candles...

The photos do not do justice to just how fabulous the setting looked with the warmth and sparkle generated by the votives.

The beauty of the candles live on way past the wedding day and we have enjoyed them many times over creating new memories and rekindling our collective memory of a very happy and special day for all our families.

Many people contributed in large and small ways with their friendship and professionalism to a create a wonderful day and a pleasant and happy atmosphere. You were one of those and your help is truly appreciated and remembered."

[quick break here in the sharing for you to wipe your eyes and enjoy some wedding photographs]...

but that's not all... the loving continued...

"Before I go I must tell you a story of how "queenb saved the day" or more correctly how "queenb saved the dinner" .

It was early  autumn evening and  barely any light left in the sky. The table was set, family seated, dinner was cooked and just plated when suddenly all was BLACK. Every thing electrical in the house shut down. We grappled with matches, whipped out of the drawer some
roll your owns I'd made at the class years ago and found some tall glasses to hold them.

We quickly  investigated and found  we could not turn anything back on. With the votives already on the table we were able to enjoy a hot dinner and Laura's birthday cake uninterrupted .Without the candles dinner would have been a disaster (the torch was useless) but instead we really enjoyed the extra sparkling candle light.

After dinner we called Energy Aus who diagnosed our hot water service was having difficulties and had tripped  the power.  The HWS that was repaired evening.

My tip for all hosts is to have a ready supply of queenb tapers and votive/tea lights for every dinner and in case of emergency!  I mean you can warm things with the tea lights too!"

  • Queen B featured on The Design Files

About 6 weeks ago one of our customers contacted me to tell me that I really needed to get Queen B candles reviewed or featured on The Design Files.  I looked it up and started an email to Lucy the editor and then as life would have it, the phone rang, the email pinged, a candle-maker called and I forgot all about it.

A few weeks later the same customer emailed to say congrats.  The Design Files had written about Queen B candles.  I checked my sent items to see if I had actually sent something unknowingly (yes, I am sometimes more productive than I realise!), but there was nothing there.  Angels had intervened!  I emailed Lucy to say thanks and she had found out about Queen B from our friend Joost.  Funny how these things work.

Lucy then ran an online giveaway for her readers and it was such a roaring success, that it crashed the comments server!  You can see the comments here - http://www.thedesignfiles.net/2010/03/queen-b-earth-hour-candle-giveaway.html - and here - http://www.thedesignfiles.net/2010/03/qyeen-b-earth-hour-giveaway-part-2.html.

I learned a lot from reading the comments - and on the basis of the feedback will make some changes/improvements to the information on our website.  I was also struck by the sheer number of people who commented.

Often with Queen B, a lot of 'brainstorming' goes on in my own mind.  I am quite good at seeing both sides of an argument, but that then makes it difficult to come to a decision!  How much easier would it be to have lots of feedback from the people who ultimately keep Queen B afloat?

So, we're going to have a weekly giveaway on Queen B.  It won't necessarily be huge, but hopefully it will encourage lots of you to subscribe to see our blog posts (the 'Subscribe' box is to the right) and to post comments and feedback.  I am mindful of the fact that I would like to have loyal customers reading the blog (not just people wanting freebies), but the purpose of this blog is to record some of the Queen B journey and to educate - about beeswax candles, and running a small business and what we're up to - and it would be great to have more people on that journey.

I'll do a post shortly with our first giveaway.

Feel free to post your comments to this or any other post.
